It might be me, but my workflow (photoshop, scripting etc) is much better on desktop
Laptop isn't bad or anything. It's just I can't get used to, and ofcourse early mentioned stuff.

Also, if you use laptop much at one place. Remove battery. Mine is literally dead. 45 minutes max on energy saving. 5 minutes on high performance lol

As I've said all over the internet countless times, I'm specifically building this insanely high end for my insanely realistic 3D animating. I don't do the whole common "cartoon" style with a fancy rendering engine, I make it all very realistic feeling and looking. Therefore, (and by years of research) a standard high end "Gaming" computer will only play games and make 3D animations to the extent of how high end games look now adays which is NOT what I'm shooting for at all. I'm shooting for "simulating reality" Just think about it. If I were to attempt to make a "realisticish" 3D animation on my current laptop, not only will it crash every time I do it more then 4 times a day, but I don't think what looks like video games from 2004 would look good as being "Realistic" or at all accurate. Texture stretching like mad, overall too low of polygon count, cars and things wouldn't dent and break nicely at all, draw distance would be a$s, and having no teeth would be just stupid. Also rendering at x5 anti aliasing with a really slow rendering rate would not only look like a$s in the end, but would suck to wait that long for. And finally cutting scenes into a freaking million different saves to keep a decent framerate so I won't crash is extremely annoying. With the movie Exigency I'm making with D3 characters and vehicles, I have already had to split many many areas apart to keep the polygon count down. -My apologies for this being so damn long lol.

Beats my old laptop: half an hour max on energy saving.

Yeah I got the S3 Mini, and its like a laptop. High expectations, high price. mediocre performance
Maybe you should compare the Sony Xperia Z1 with the Sony Xperia Z1 compact. Smaller size (4.3" vs 5") exact same specifications except battery size. Samsung and HTC mini versions are a poor attempt. Sony's win only costs an extra $100. With the S4 mini costing at $450, $100 extra offers double the performance if not more. 1.7 Ghz Dual Core vs 2.2Ghz Quad Core as an example.

But I do agree laptops aren't the way to go if you don't care about portability. In terms of graphics performance the 870M is equivalent to a Nvidia 760 and can be had in a gaming laptop for $1800. With quad core 2.8Ghz (on turbo boost). I'm also a little bit cray, cray.... I want a gaming laptop with a 880M but they cost a fortune. So I'll probably save up and wait until next generation and maybe get the 875M or 970M (don't search them, I'm guessing what they will come up with, hehe).
DaRkProDucTioNs00 wrote:No. The AMD FX 9370 8 core is very powerful, and suits my 3D animating better because of the excessive amounts of cores. Although each processor brand and model deals with code and polygons all different, I've done plenty of research and found the AMD FX8350 was a match, so I went over to the fastest and newest version to ensure full quality. Also, more cores isn't weaker LMAO!!!!
I think I was trying to say AMD's speed isn't as advertised. I don't know enough about it but I've read from numerous places that Intel's benchmark a fair bit quicker than a AMD equivalent. But this is mainly for laptops, as that's what I focus on. Eight cores would defiantly be faster than four-cores I agree. But is spending excessive amounts on the highest end really worth it when you can just upgrade later on. I see your probably looking at Titan Z graphics I cannot imagine why anyone in their right mind would need 12gb of video memory. Unless your making incredibly high and detailed scenes.

I guess I'm just so used to not having as much money to spend and I know you know how that feels living with pentium 4 for so long. I just thought it would be a good idea to not aim as high and save for your future. You pay a premium for the latest bleeding edge tech, that premium cost associated doesn't feel to me as if it's worth it.

But you have researched everything in a lot of detail and I reckon if you think it's right your on the right track. Many of us dream of being able to afford such great rigs.

Anyways, I hope your not putting your eggs all into one basket too soon. I do believe you can do great with this technology in your hands just keep in mind how expensive these things are. Good luck with everything :) It's a really big step coming from a Pentium 4.

Pretty much. Not only will just lets say... People have intense detail, but I would like to keep scenes all in one world/save which would also increase draw distance and overall feel of realism. The excessive amounts of trash and crap laying all over the place is also something that will eventually add up, and with my current laptop, I immediately reach it's limits at around 44982 polygons (non triangle mesh) which guess what I made to find out that? I had made a human head. Low poly eyes, low poly teeth, low poly unfinished hair, and heavy detailed faucal structure which I duplicated once to get to 44982 faces. This is the two video cards I've been mostly looking at.
http://www.amazon.com/NVIDIA-900-52055- ... video+card -The lack of description drags me away from it.
http://www.amazon.com/EVGA-GeForce-Supp ... video+card -Not as much video memory as I desire.
http://www.amazon.com/PNY-VCQK6000-PB-Q ... Y8G7FKW100 -Damn

Thanks :D . And even know I most certainly am putting every egg in one basket, no matter what I will have something better then what I'm currently stuck with. Such as, this 2004 OptiPlex I'm rebuilding, if I end up not being able to sell it, then I still have something that will at least play GTA IV and have 1GB video memory. Anyway I've always kept in mind how expensive this build will be. It's not going to be easy at all, but I already have my GX280's new parts about to be shipped to my house (I spent the entire $200 on it that I currently have) and I will be able to upgrade it and sell it for 300-350. Side note, it's operating system became corrupted and I don't have the disc so I have to buy Windows again (Upgrading it from XP to 7) It's going to take A LOT of older towers to make that gigantic $6000 range.
It most certainly is a huge step from the Pentium 4. Thanks to this new tower being scarcely strong, I can now get far, far far farrrrr away from this laggy, crashy, freezy, mess that I've been stuck with forever lol. Originally coming from a Pentium 4 at 1.40Ghz and in 2011 got my current laptop. Even know my laptop fits and slightly exceeds the specifications to play Garry's mod and TF2 for example, it still can't manage a stable framerate and tends to have a fetish to crash and freeze. Ah, Also, I'm beginning to sell my own custom 3D models on ebay to help to lol. For example, I think I will make this: Image

-sweet jesus that's a long post-

A setup like the one i'm having built would handle realistic renders/animations just fine, but if you want to blow 2-3 grand(average price an 80's Monte Carlo, Cutlass, Foxbody Stang or Iroc-Z goes for on Craigslist) on a PC, be my guest.
"Realistic rendering" -That's about it. My laptop can run fancy renders, but as far as ANY computer goes their limited OBVIOUSLY to what games they can play with some struggle to stay above 20fps. My animations aren't about realistic looking fancy renderers, their about realistic all over. Here's an example:
Here we have a fancy, beautiful race in progress. Of course a "fancy renderer" with many different rendering enhancements I have made such as reflections and simple lense flare.
Image
Ah, here we have our chunky, blocky, and very low polygon models that can't dent very well at all. I have dented the cars up a bit to revel the low polygonness. And overall these models are a really outdated "realistic" type of vehicles.
Image
Postaldude, your computer can most certainly make some good looking animations, but not anything like what I do. So I'm not going WAY overpriced, I'm going right were I should be. If I was making cartoon animations or GTA IV polygon count like animations then a standard gaming rig would be fine.

For laptops I prefer AMD myself really. New one still isn't a gaming laptop but it does a damn good job of running games I really want to play, like S.T.A.L.K.E.R..

Intel, eh, I personally don't have much positive to say about it (again when it comes to laptops).

In 2007-2009, if you bought a laptop for under $500, you would get the crap Intel Celeron... Now adays it's a lot more clean, such as in 2011 you could get a Pentium dual core a 2.00Ghz (a great processor and will play a lot of modern games that are 2011 and older) Currently, for around $450, you could get a Core i3. I've seen this processor in action, it's amazing! My laptop has a Pentium dual core at 2.00Ghz and 192mb of video memory. My laptop barley plays GTA IV and if it does is nearly unplayable with constant freezing and crashing(Average fps is 10). While some kid I know on steam has a Core i3 at 2.40Ghz and only 64mb video memory. He plays GTA IV at minimum settings with no lag at all (40Fps average). .-. Anyway, I'm not sure where I went with that, but I mostly know all of Intel's products and am learning about AMD's. AMD's seems a lot cheaper (on their high end processors that is). This is why I'm getting the FX 9370, 8 cores (which Intel JUST came out with) and AMD's is far cheaper.

To get back to my favourite topic of really stupid censorship: I recently found out I have the censored versions of FlatOut 2 and Ultimate Carnage.

THEY CENSORED FLATOUT.

Probably not. *Might be* they were going to add it though. Sometimes in Driv3r if you kill someone, you can see water splash out of them. Maybe it was temporary.

lol, so we all got the censored version probably because of Germany. Oh crap...
Oh well I don't really mind, it still looks decent without blood. Blood splatting out of people isn't something those generation of consoles was good at perfecting in a semi-realistic looking game. So in a way I'm glad they didn't.

Though I thought I remember the screen turns red when you get shot. Cannot really remember. I don't get out of the car to often these days in DRVI3R.

I might get into the moding side of things again too.
