It's a combination of views and clicks.
If there are 2000 views and a click it might earn 15 cents.
But if there were 200 views and a click it might only earn 2 cents.
The views have to be from different uses, all this is generated on averages so people cannot cheat the system.

They cannot really tell, but the idea is if your interested in the product/service being advertised and have clicked the ad you'd read more about it.
Miller wrote:Do you know if there is any effort on the part of Google to ensure the safety of opening the web pages linked to by their ads?
I assume you mean if any of those pages contain viruses/spyware and other malicious scripts.
In that case
Google Ad has advertisers and publishers details including Social Security Numbers, Valid Addresses, Business Number, other tax information so they can be reported to their local authorities if they commit any crimes, I belieave it's against the law to purposely spread viruses and spyware.
I'm not entirly sure, but would be against their Terms of Service if it is deemed to be unsafe.
Read their content policy
here.
Google AdWords TOS wrote:Don't promote illegal traffic devices.
Advertising is not permitted for the promotion of radar jammers, license plate covers, traffic signal changers, and related products.
In addition, advertising is not permitted for the promotion of radar detectors in Germany, France, Belgium, Luxemburg, Poland, or Switzerland.
Oh, No...
How is TK going to find out about this awesome equipment on his hunt for Corrigon.

I'm not allowed to tell anyone to click links, if the product/service advertised is interesting and the user is interested in learning more about it then you can consider visiting it.
Think if you where the person advertising the product would you like people clicking your ads for no reason, commiting click fraud.
If your interested in the ad then you can do whatever you like with it.
Googles Click Fraud protection is pretty good at 2% fraud. Where other services most likly have much larger percentage.

A while ago Google offered Firefox ads to publishers like myself.
They offered 50 cents per install, so far there have been about 10 to 20 installs which has earned from $5 to $10
We used to have "
Get Firefox support Driver Madness", but now google has it's own browser it has removed this ad.
I'll check my adsense account and see if they have added any other
products, if they look good/useful I might share them with everyone.
Hope this post answered all your questions regarding Google Adsense.
