Because video games are fun.

This was almost going to go into the Driver news category but since this is really about GTA IV I decided not to. Just the fact that developers of GTA decided to put a film director type tool in their latest video game GTA IV for the PC Platform.
Rockstar Games wrote:Exclusive to this PC release of Grand Theft Auto IV is the special Video Editor feature. At any time during gameplay, just hit F2 on your keyboard and the last 30-45 seconds (duration will vary based on your user settings and PC specifications) will be captured on your hard drive as raw footage. Then, load up the Video Editor (easily accessible through your in-game mobile phone) to edit away - with a suite of tools that can change the camera angle, audio, and speed - plus special effects to tweak colors, add filters, and more.
Sounds very much like Driver's film director.
I would say it's impossible to change camera angles when the video has been saved in raw footage format though. If it could edit raw video then you wouldn't need a video editing app you'd just use GTA IV :? .

Anyways, I think it's good GTA adding a Film Director.
I'm not going to complain about them taking reflections idea although it's much harder to make up the idea of a film director than a free roam environment.

But all games should be entitled to using other games ideas as long as there pretty broad and many development teams could think of it.

I'm not sure how similar GTA and Driver's Film Director are as I'm going to wait until GTA IV becomes a budget title before I purchase it.

I haven't been able to watch it due to very restrictive internet connection although you can watch this tutorial and see how similar it is.

If reflections do decided to continue the free-roam environment and want to build in their famous film director the only way they can achieve this is to add a last couple of minutes (set-time in options menu) (or entire mission) by default is recorded.

If this is the case I would be concerned that GTA fans would continue calling Driver even more of a GTA clone when in reality if GTA Film Director never existed and Reflections wanted to put in a Film Director they would only have one option anyways.

What do you think about all this?

I don't think that the GTA fans will call Driver a GTA clone even more. If they're smart enough, they read a preview, they will see something like "...The film director makes a return, after being removed in the last game...".

Well, finally Rockstar is adding a "real" film director, not that "amazing" replay mode in the past games.
