yeah the schools are that bad, at least in some places. Jefferson & orleans parish schools are amonst the worst performing in tha country.

what do you think the first plaque is there for? the third? who do you thinks gonna arrest you? I suppose you could call and wait for cops, but why when there are po po's already on campus. they're there for a reason.

im sure the majority of american kids go to public school. it's free. I really dont know the attendence ration tho. I know there are way more catholic and more private schools here in this area, but public school attendence is wayyy higher

Public schools in no & jefferson (betcha cant guess which one I go to haha)

Bonnabel
East Jefferson
Grace King
McDonough 35
McMain
Riverdale

I think theres a few more, but private & catholic schools here are like, 3x as many with way less attendence

Very few private schools here.
I went to a Catholic school. Most of our students were Italian or Greek. I stood out a little, being my usual pale self :p

I went to both, but public schools in Australia are different to the ones in the States and Europe. I think it's something like a public school in Britain is the equivalent of a private school in Australia (unless it's top end... And no-one likes the students that go there. lol)
We didn't have security or police during the day. At night, there's security and police do a drive-by every 60 minutes.
And they built a police station two minutes up the road, so there was no real point... But we didn't have much of a reason for them. Not at the public school, anyway. Sure, one kid got stabbed, but from what I hear, he deserved it.
At the private school, though, we had bomb threats, drug raids... All kinds of stuff. In my first year, the fire department was called out every week. It was horrible. It starts out all "whoo! out of class!" and turns into hell. We know there's no fire! Let us go inside!" because 35 degree weather and thick wool skirts and blazers don't really go well together...
But, back on topic, it was never bad... We had part of a building blown up in year 11, but it was at night, and no-one was hurt... and the school wasn't closed down, which was what everyone really wanted... :p
We see stuff on the news about american high schools though, with metal detectors and security guards. It's pretty extreme to us...

Well most of the people in Ireland are Catholic so that would explain the amount of Catholic schools.

Very few schools here are non-religious, they are mainly either Catholic [good] or Protestant [bad] Nah, only joking. :)

Only our school, from what I've seen. The one near where I work only has the little step fences (or, the itty-bitty metal fences that work effectively at keeping out toddlers, but nothing else).

We have very few non-religious private schools... Actually, I can only think of one... :?
I'm not religious though. I hated having a Catholic education (it's left me quite stunted in some areas of embarrassment at my age).

Wow! The worst I had heard was metal detectors used in some 'state' schools down in london where there was a problem with knife crime. I personaly can't see any reason pupils would carry wepons, it just seems retarded, but I suppose America has strong traditions about carrying arms... Also can I ask how many of you guys feel school/college prepared you for 'life'?

Feeling that, especially as I went to an all boys school, at least I got the grades I needed, just, so I'm really looking forward to university!

I dont see the firearm thing to have anything about the country's history of holding arms, AT ALL. in fact id be willing to bet you 1/3 or more students in american public school could tell you what ammendment supports the right to hold arms. to be completely honest.. I'm not even completely sure. smh.

students bringing pistols to school arose because of drugs, robbery, and safety. and while crime in school has gone down, drug deals and school fights & jumps aren't really going away

I think it's the second, and I'm not even American.

We had people in the public school carry weapons, but I don't remember ever seeing any at the private school. Not saying there weren't any, just that they were smarter about hiding them.
Drugs were our thing, not weapons. Lol.

Like I said, there was little preparation for us. I left school and went to university, and couldn't deal with it. Honestly, I hated school anyway, but I don't like being told my entire life that everyone deserves equality, and then realising that it's equality, unless you're of a certain race, and then people have to be more "delicate".
I probably did the wrong course.
Plus, I have no social skills (and yet, i work in a bar... It's rather strange) and I'm horrible at communicating with people (apparently, I: talk too fast, stutter, mumble or just don't dumb things down enough...).
But I had those issues before I started high school. I'll probably have them my entire life. It's not something easily fixed. It was something that was brought up at every parent-teacher meeting though. Quite irksome.

Pretty sure schools in Salisbury (and Elizabeth, for that matter) always had fences. It's a bit of a necessity. I know that Fremont has had fences since the eighties :/
And yeah, there's logic. Schools prone to vandalism, violence, theft, etc. And yet, The Heights doesn't from what I've seen...

Reading all of this, I feel quite lucky. None of my schools had metal detectors or fences, and cops only paid a visit if someone was getting busted for something, probably drug possession. However, my youngest brother, who still goes to high school, tells me that they got cameras now.

My street and work flooded. Only the dock at work, but a lot of stores around the area had to close. I loved it. Now it's all sunny and horrid.

We had cameras... When I got suspended, the co-ordinator for our year pointed them all out to me. He seemed shocked that I knew what they were, and that I knew which ones didn't work :p
We didn't have the police at -my- school often. Fire department, not police. lol
