Technically, it's not GM in Australia. GM is the parent company. Here, it's Holden, so not calling it GM is pretty standard for us. And I'd probably be disowned for driving anything except a Holden. I'm willing to put money on it that my first car will be a Gemini or something like that...
And Ford is one of the biggest car manufacturers in the world. Pretty sure US cars have no issue with disappearing...

I do live on the other side of the world, but please check what countries were dragged into the recession, which countries went to Afghanistan and Iraq with the Americans, what countries have been targeted by terrorists due to their involvement in the previously mentioned wars and which countries tend to be the closest suck-ups to the USA. Pretty sure Australia and England are at the top of every list. The US is a super power. Just as we pay attention to what China does, because they can destroy our economy, so can the Americans. So, as a matter of fact, we do pay attention to US politics. They influence us quite a lot.
