FINALLY
In addition to my other threads in this D1 forum, I have discovered only certain copies of the PC version support the music.
Many people have stated this is not a problem, and not a single message board, including archived ones, have figured it out for all those people who said they couldn't hear music.
I recently purchased a boxed version, which, after trying out on 5 different PCs w/multiple operating systems such as W95, W98, XP, and Vista, not a second of music would play. I ran into the same scenario EVERY time; was not able to turn the music 'ON', was not to hear any music. I went through hundreds of forum pages, present and archived, and found no explaination or answer to why myself and many others could not get the music working.
I bit the bullet and bought another copy, which happened to be 3x LESS expensive, the "jewel case" copy. As soon as I popped it in the first PC, with no patches, nothing...*bass line* DUN DUH DUN DuDUH DUH DUH lmao you get the point.

The CLINCHER:
The faulty 'retail box' copy was produced in 2000 and resembled the working copy exactly in design, but had multiple colors (a deep black and "YOU ARE THE WHEELMAN" in yellow); surprising the better looking copy doesn't work. The working copy resembled the PS1 Non-Greatest Hits disc exactly, and only had one hue of blue, lacking the black and yellow. It was produced in 1999, the first press of it.

The BOTTOM LINE:Being that I have not tested the newer presses which Atari created, my assumption is that they too lack the music (only because this newer 2000 version lacked it, as the 1999 did not). Also, I am appauled at Reflections/GT Interactive for this. I figured it would at Atari's hand, as most game disasters are, but this 2000 copy (before Atari was in the equation) lacked one of the most quintessential part of Driver. THE MUSIC! I have no idea why this happened and I wouldn't be surprised if the former employees of Reflections/GT Interactive don't know either. I am surprised that I am the first person on a Driver forum to figure this out (questionable), but I hope for all those people that asked for help on multiple forums about the music not working read this post!

*I am experiencing the 8 second music loop glitch right now, but that's a problem easily fixed. Regardless, it has the music files, the fact that they're there is fine with me, but I am NOT cool with merchants selling faulty copies. Who the hell wants to buy an incomplete game?! I am sure the merchants don't even know this though, so it's not really their fault. Sh*t happens.

I purchased my working copy on http://www.amazon.com under a buying selling the [Jewel Case] for $.01 and $3.99 shipping. Be sure to look for [Jewel Case] in the title, as there are two links for Driver PC; Driver PC and Driver PC [Jewel Case].

Lay the hammer down, justice is served.

That's very odd. They should work on both. And i think that anyone who doesn't have working music has a decent greivence they could raise and get a fully working copy... For free.

I've noticed this too however there is a better explanation.
My situation is pretty different compared to your situation. Considering their are other downloadable and magazine cover disk versions which promoted driv3r.

First of all I'll start off with saying that my pc version of driver 1 didn't look like either of the ones you posted a picture of, it looked completely different as the tyre stood out a lot more.

There are three different forms you could get the game on, there could be more however I haven't encountered a situation where this has occurred.

Standard CD Version
Download (via. Direct2Drive)
Cover Disk (via. PC Magazines)

The standard cd version should contain all the music, this was the first pc release of the game as I got this disk just as the game was released.
The music files can easily be played in a cd player, to see if they are there or not.

The download version is about 40meg it contains the game. I'm not sure in complete detail but I think the fmv have survearly been compressed or removed along with the music, as this adds another 500meg to the download so they decided to remove it for the download release.

The cover disk magazine version had all the fmv's and the basic game. Like on the standard version the fmv's ran of the disk but why not the music. This is because the music wasn't added.

If you wondering why the music wasn't added there is a very good explanation, when they made the game they made the games programming read track 2 to 7 off the cd just like a normal cd player. Meaning the music files aren't readable of the pc, there not .mp3 nor are they .wav or any other format.

With the proper version of driver they released a music data disk which contained the music tracks and the game on the data segment. With the magazine they never included the music track because that is too much fooling around, plus the file size would be large as it's saved in some sort of uncompressed format whenever you burn audio to a cd like that.

So they left this out so they could put the manual, adobe acrobat reader for the manual and some of their own content rather than the music tracks and considering the music tracks weren't .wav or .mp3 format they didn't worry about copying them from the previous game because it's a lot of work plus it's a little complicated for them.

So why cannot they get the game to read a .mp3 format, well they programming never allowed anyone to do this. The programming only supports tracks on the cd and no where else in a special format that your unable to find when looking at the cd within explorer view.

What I'm trying to say is a little complicate but I hope you get what I mean.

I find it interesting that you have found two standard cd's, one without the music and the other with. Infograms changing to Atari really had nothing to do with it as Atari basically is Infograms, they decided to change there name as Infograms was in some sort of financial trouble I think and the infograms site still works and it's got Atari written all over it if you want to check it out.

I'll also say I have never experience any type of audio glitches.
Also, I'll look at all the versions I currently own at the moment and report them to you.

Also "drumbum" thanks for your deep investigation into this issue. I never knew much about those other versions of the game. Well I knew about them but there cover art looks so different.

I'll get back to you with the versions I got to soon.

Unfortunately, I'm still having the 8 second loop problem. I'm afraid all patches (even if they DO fix the skipping problem) cause a "Please insert the CD-ROM" error. I've tried patch releases 2.0 and 2.1.

I've also tried the CD patch hosted here on the site, but I suppose it only works for the UK version. "Lang?Missing?" appears for every line of text, and the music still skips. I suppse it's hopeless. Strangely though, the CD-ROM will play the full tracks on a CD player, even Windows Media Player thinks it's a Notorious BIG album w/songs about crack lmao. I really am going insane trying to get this to work. I've dissected multiple patches and tried to edit them/remove components, but nothing. It can't be something large, it's just a read problem, not fufilling the tracks' full play times. So far, it hasn't worked on 2 PCs w/XP, gonna try Vista soon. Who knows...

I tried it on the beta release of Widows Vista and it works perfectly.
so Driver continues to work on another generation of computer hardware.

It's frustrating considering over 10 different patches have been released for all sorts of different area's at a time like this it's just confusing which one you should use.

Hope you get it working, and I might go on a hunt looking for more patches.

edit: I've just attached an image of my copy, back when it was released.

you can always run winamp, windows media player or any other audio player in the background while playing. It's not going to be the same but works.

My disk is different then those two! It has a picture of the front cover except with less color (I might post a pic) so I sharpied in the red on the cop car's lightbar (I was like 10 XD). I got it at Staples In Oklahoma I think so it might depend on the location.

Pictures (I think 1 or 2 are crappy, sorry I'm jittery XD):

EDIT: I can only get the music to work if the disk is in and I've heard that happens a lot.

Yeah, this is because the music is located on the cd and if there is no cd the game doesn't know where to find the music. Unless it is somehow programmed to look elsewhere.

Yes (you know all this stuff lol) and I can't even remember the music because I'm too damn lazy to look through my CD rack as my Driver case has nothing printed on the side :P

here is something funny about the 8-second loop problem - It only occurs when vehicles and stuff are moving. If you go into film director and use the tripod option, keep it in one spot and WOW the music will actually continue to play! OMG! but sadly once you click OK it just loops itself again. It's bullsh**!
