Discussion for Driver: Parallel Lines (2006)

Driver 76 has only 1976. I think it's okay to have only one era but I would prefer 2006.

I don't know if they could have made the city bigger. Most of the changes are only texture changes which don't take so many space.

PS: I accepted you on msn.

Like coyote says, it was mostly texture changes. I'm sure there were probably some different buildings in 2006 however, and maybe some construction site may be completed, i never really checked, I'm sure there probably was plenty more space on the disc to add a whole new island, but the map itself was a pretty decent size as it was.

And i didn't really like, or know why everything had a blueish tinge in 2006, i didn't like that. But if they just kept it all bright like the seventies, and extended the seventies missions, i think that would be good enough.

In the 70's everything was more orange / yellow / brown, and that was to make the atmosphere more … umm… 70's like, whereas in 2006, as you said, everything was blue / graphit, I think they wanted to show that the city is very poluted, and everything looks like in the future (with the music too).

Orange is a warm color, blue stands for coldness. In 1978 TK is naive and young, the 70s were the time of flower power, the good old times. In 2006 he wants revenge, he is more brutal, the world around him is also more brutal, more criminal, cold.

Yeah, JAY has got the color scheme pretty straightened out.
The two eras where separated by

Impressing People
Getting Revenge

Light
Dark

Bright
Dark

Orange
Blue

Cold
Hot

Cool
Warm

Younger
Older

Wiser
Meaner

and similar things to that.

Sure, reflections could have made it double the size it is now. You all seem to be thinking textures are nothing compared to the actual polygons and collision Zones but textures make up most of that, at least 75% of the game I believe (excluding FMV's, sounds music).

These are estimates I haven't checked them myself.
Textures: 1.5gig
FMVS: 1.8gig
Music: 1gig
Others: 500meg (Cols, Polys, Scripts)
Total: 3.8gig

DVD6: 4.7gig (single layer)
DVD9: 9.6gig (dual layer)

Now most games use a single layer disk but games like Gran Turismo 4 seem are using Dual-Layer so they can include many more tracks and vehicles. 900 vehicles they have and tons of tracks.

If reflections were restricted to a single layered disk, They could have not included FMV's and could have included double the city, well probably even triple. But FMV's are an important part of the series so they could have removed the second era and would have had enough space for double the city, yes.

If reflections where smart about things, and believe me it is impossible to do with the ps2 generation. But would work great with the ps3 generation. Reflections could use *78 textures for an entire city that filled up the disk and they could still have the *06 textures. Why? let me explain.

Reflections could allow the ps3 to process all the texture files and store them on the ps3's hard disk drive. It could add a darker blue filter to most textures in the game and this would enable the game to be double the size of the ps3's maximum disk capacity. Bad thing is, this is impossible with the xbox as the games *06 era would be unplayable for those without a hard drive.

Another idea is to apply the filter in real-time but that would use way to much processing power which could be better used for traffic AI and film director mode.

But still an interesting way of going about things.

There was really no point talking about this in detail because with next generation consoles and media using HD DVD and Blu-Ray technology game developers can get up to 25gig single layer and 50gig dual-layer. But I guess we are talking about this because we are talking about what reflections could have done with driver: parallel lines on the ps2 and xbox.

Unfortunately the xbox360 is letting game developers down with last generation media technology using a maximum of Dual-Layer DVD like the last generations ps2.

But in the end why worry about that when you can add another disk in the box, make people think there getting more for there dollar.

and for Driver: Parallel Lines, they should have used a dual-layer disk for double the capacity, that would mean triple the city (still including both eras without doing what I said above) and double the FMVs.

Wouldn't that be amazing!
But I guess it'll take to long to develop all of that.
Reflections have a team of about 170people, The makers of grand turismo probably have 500 to thousand's (although I haven't counted).
