So today the single player demo for Driver: San Francisco has been released for XBOX Live and PSN. In this review I am going to give my opinion and experience of what has been presented.
In the first mission "Prove It", Tanner tries explaining to Jones his new ability. When Tanner first says that he has something to tell Jones, Jones asks Tanner if he's pregnant again.
So far I'm liking this game's sense of humor. As Tanner describes Shifting to Jones, a "jackass" drives by. Tanner makes a bet with Jones to prove his shift ability. First Tanner makes the jackass drive off a ramp. Jones ain't convinced. Then Tanner gets the jackass in a police chase. And Jones still isn't convinced. Then Tanner bets $50 with Jones that "he'll be hooked up to a tow truck before they catch him." Tanner drives the car into a tow truck and gets it hooked. Then he turns to his passenger and says "Wait a few minutes, then punch me in the face." In a few minutes Tanner will be out of the body of the jackass, and the jackass will get the hell beat outta him. Again, this game has dark sense of humor that I like.
Next is Team Colors. You have to get both of your cars to finish first and second. The other team is impossible to beat without shift. This is where I got to really try out shift. I was looking for something to wreck my opponents. I tried finding heavier vehicles but I can never find any. So I kept shifting into crappy hatchbacks and Chevelles to try and wreck the racers. The first couple attempts to ram them were major misses that ended up hitting my race cars. That also reminds me to mention that when you shift out of a car that car drive terribly. My racers slowed down and steered INTO the cars I was trying to ram into the racers. This is something that must be fixed before final release. This is very annoying in police chases when I am about to lose the cops and my idiot car decides to slow down so the cops catch up WHILE I'm trying to find it to shift back into it. I also discovered the quick shift after the all of this. That really comes in handy. Anyways, I won the race after completely destroying my enemy team's cars (almost destroying my team's).
The final mission is "Escapist" where you get your VIP passenger to a certain place in a certain amount of time while losing the cops at the same time. This mission reminds me of Need for Speed Most Wanted with the Corvettes and SUVs. The cops are annoying. If you expect clean getaways like in previous Driver games, that is IMPOSSIBLE in here. There is a lot of crashing as the cops pop out from corners and catch up to you since they have godlike speed (GTA1 anyone?) I used shift ALOT in this mission to ram those obnoxious Corvettes. Your passenger also has a rude, sarcastic attitude that is actually kind of funny.
Ok and here is general things I would like to mention. Pedestrians are now impossible to hit like in Driver 1 and 2, but I like how Reflections dealt with them. They don't go through walls and they always know how to dodge your car. They also will drop shopping bags too. Good work with pedestrians now I don't feel like a homicidal maniac when going on the sidewalk. The controls could use work. They are kind of annoying especially when used to playing other racing games. I HATE where the handbrake and boost controls are. Handbrake should be A, shift should be pushing a joystick down or something and B should be where the boost is. And for anyone looking for manual transmission, forget about it. There is just no room on the controller. The soundtrack is decent from what I've heard. Besides the funky 70s style music I heard one modern rock song. I do not like the game's support for standard TVs. You cannot read track information on standard TVs even though mine is HUGE. Damage is not impressive it is minimum like Forza 3 (due to licensing). The game has a gritty tone to it like previous Driver games. The people you shift into have varied passengers. Sometimes I'm an illegal mexican without a green card and sometimes I'm a soccer mom with a concerned child. Repeating dialogue is not too much of a concern in here (however Tanner says the same lines over and over again). I give the demo a 7/10 and I cannot wait until next week's MP Demo. I am DEFINITELY getting this game when it comes out.
