I'm not sure about other countries, but here, when news readers say "passed away", they tend to only talk about people who died of old age... Died implies there was something else at hand, as in the case of Peter Yates (may he rest in peace)...
I can't remember any where it's been "passed away", but I could be mistaken. It's all about context.

But there is no difference... Not really.
