Today, we're proud to announce that Grand Theft Auto V is expected to launch worldwide spring 2013 for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.
Developed by series creator Rockstar North, Grand Theft Auto V takes place in a re-imagined, present-day Southern California in the largest and most thriving game-world we have ever created set in the sprawling city of Los Santos and for miles beyond – from the tops of the mountains to the depths of the ocean.
Starting next week November 5, 2012, Grand Theft Auto V will become available for pre-order everywhere and fans can expect a host of new information to become available in November.
Look for downloadable desktop versions of the brand new artwork above coming very soon.
No info about PC version yet, probably it will be released later, like GTA IV.
A second trailer was due to be revealed on 2 November 2012, exactly one year after the first trailer was released but this was delayed due to the effects of Hurricane Sandy. The official online newsletter for the makers of Grand Theft Auto stated: “Unfortunately Hurricane Sandy has derailed our plans somewhat but we will have something to show soon. Its hard to be precise as we have no power whatsoever in our New York office. We hope everyone else in affected areas is doing OK."
- GTA 5 "evolves nearly every mechanic" found in previous games in the series.
- Features the biggest open world in the series' history - GTA 5's world is bigger than the worlds of Red Dead Redemption, San Andreas and GTA IV combined.
- Three playable characters who you can switch between "at nearly any time".
- Each character has their own specific abilities and story arc, with all three stories intertwined.
- Camera zooms out to a "Google Earth-style" perspective when switching characters.
- Character 1 - Michael, an ex-bank robber in his early 40s who retired after making a deal with the FIB. He has two teenage children and hates his wife Amanda. He's also the narrator of the original GTA 5 trailer.
- Character 2 - Trevor, a former war veteran and a "drugged out psychopath". An experienced pilot.
- Character 3 - Franklin, a repo man in his mid 20s described as a "young and ambitious hustler".
- Certain characters from GTA IV and Episodes From Liberty City will also make an appearance. Rockstar's Dan Houser says we'll never see characters from the PS2 era, though. "The five PS2 games are one universe, and this is the high definition universe, so they don't co-exist," he says.
- No major actors cast as any of the main characters.
- Focus on making more diverse missions.
- Heists and bank robberies are a big theme to the game.
- Characters will work together during missions, and you can switch between characters mid-mission to fulfill different roles. For example, during a chase sequence you can pilot the getaway helicopter as Trevor, snipe pursuing pilots as Franklin, or fire an assault rifle as Michael.
- Missions will have a "very diiferent tone depending on who's on them, how many people are on them, and how much we're using switches", says Houser.
- Even when you're not controlling them, each character will still go about their own business across Los Santos. "You may be surprised by the situations they find themselves in should you switch back to check up on them," says Game Informer.
- Big advances to lighting and shader model. Greater draw distance.
- Improved vehicle handling and physics - "The cars hold to the ground better... It feels more like a racing game," Houser says.
- More vehicles than in any GTA to date, including BMXs, mountain bikes, road bikes, dirt bikes, cars, trucks, helicopters, planes, ATVs and Jet Skis, but vehicle manufacturers are still fictional.
- Fighter jets appear to be in. One screenshot shows a fighter equipped with missiles, as a helicopter explodes in the background.
- Improved shooting and melee combat. Melee combat "never going to be as big a deal as shooting," though, warns Houser.
- Pedestrians are fully mo-capped and more interactive.
- You can rappel down buildings, although it's not confirmed whether this is specific to certain missions.
- Los Santos is described as a "huge and diverse city", combining the best of Red Dead Redemption's "large open expanses" with GTA IV's "densely packed urban environment".
- Areas in the game world include beachfronts, mountains, the wilderness, a "Salton Sea" region, a military base and the suburbs.
- GTA: San Andreas was about gang culture. GTA 5 is about capturing the "contemporary culture of LA".
- There will be a "vibrant and fun" economy, but you won't be able to buy property.
- A variety of different side missions and "more sophisticated" minigames, including yoga, triathlons, Jet Skiing, base-jumping, tennis and golf. There's a full golf course in the game. You can go scuba diving along the coastline of Los Santos, or go to the gym on the seafront.
- Each character will have unique hobbies, including "one or two key minigame activities per character".
- San Andreas' RPG-like player customization is still absent, but you can customize the clothing of each character.
GTA IV's romance feature has been removed.
- Like in GTA IV, players can make friends and hang out with certain NPCs, including Michael's wife Amanda and son Jimmy, Franklin's "crazy friend" Lamar, and Trevor's mate Ron.
- GTA IV's mobile phone returns, but a lot of its features have been altered. You can use it to access the internet.
- Dynamic missions - hidden missions dotted around the game world. "Going off-road in the desert, you may come across two parked cars and a sea of dead bodies around them... Investigate if you want."
I made a a temporary BB code to embed the second trailer in this thread. In 12 - 24 hours this post will most likely contain a YouTube version of the trailer and will be updated accordingly.
Enjoy.

Apparentl, GTA V, it got delayed. However, they did include an actual release date this time around!
Dear all,
Today, we have an official release date to share with you: Grand Theft Auto V will arrive in stores on September 17, 2013.
We know this is about four months later than originally planned and we know that this short delay will come as a disappointment to many of you, but, trust us, it will be worth the extra time. GTAV is a massively ambitious and complex game and it simply needs a little more polish to be of the standard we and, more importantly, you require.
To all Grand Theft Auto fans, please accept our apologies for the delay, and our promise that the entire team here is working very hard to make the game all it can be. We are doing all we can to help ensure it will meet if not exceed your expectations come September – we thank you for your support and patience.
Personally, I don't mind this. After all, it looks like they are going to polish it up to that great Rockstar standard we all so dearly love, perhaps even add small bunch of more stuff in! Hell, Max Payne 3 was excellent! It's fun seeing people go apeshit over this though. What a bunch of no-lifers. It's a game, and got only delayed for 4 months for God's sake. It is a big title, the first thing they should actually expect is a delay - like with previous Rockstar GTA games, lol. I sort of saw this coming.
Either way, my hype has been really building up a lot for this game lately.
In my opinion, a game should be released when it's finished, I think that kind of makes sense Else you'll end up with something like Driver 3 again.
Also I'm not sure if I'm mistaken, but we didn't see any actual gameplay footage yet, did we? How can they release a game in a few months and not have shown what it looks like. I mean obviously people trust Rockstar and people would buy it anyway.
I myself am not impressed. The graphics are terrible if you ask me, I mean, terrible for 2013. The unlicensed cars add some extra cheapness to the game. A wanna-be Audi, a wanna-be Mustang, a wanna-be Aston Martin. Who wants to drive that? I must admit however that a few pics do look good. However, these pics on the other hand have the "Sims" effect.
It's probably going to be a good game, however. For those who like shooting and stuff that is

Delay, smchley. We got an official release date-holy sh*t!
Let me guess about the people going apeshit over the delay-GTAForums autists?
Unlicensed cars. Yeah. I HIGHLY doubt that any of the car companies would want to see their car used to mow people down on a sidewalk in the middle of the day. Probably the reason you never seen them in games such as GTA. And honestly, I love to see how creative Rockstar gets with their own world, car companies and all. That Vapid Police Cruiser we saw in GTA IV is just a dream come true, wish there would be an actual 'Vic lookin' like it. Anyways, yeah, I can't but love to see what they come up with the cars, it's not just the usual, "let's take a real car and put it directly in our game!". I love how R* mixes the looks.
About the graphicis, well, don't judge a book by it's cover. Let's go back in time and look at GTA IV before release.
Yeah, not very beautiful. After release?

Oh yeah, looking much more polished and clean! Perhaps, even more likely it is so, that Rockstar will be using a lot of these extra months to polish the game up to that typical Rockstar standard that we've seen especially in Max Payne 3. That game ran like a dream and looked fabolous.
(Video for reference) Max Payne 3 however was much more linear, so it was easier to make it run good while also keeping the great looking graphics. We also have to understand here, that GTA V will be a big game in terms of content, from what we've so far heard of the game, and hell - seen! The visuals are impressive for such a large game that we are expecting, especially knowing it's open-world with huge amount of detail put into it! GTA IV was really impressive for such a large open world game of it's time. We can already see the amount of detail in the various screenshots R* has provided us with on V, even trailers. Judging by some of these GTA V screens and trailers, we can except GTA IV beta all over again. Even stiil, they look really great for such a big open world game. Enviroment, visuals...

I probably missed another point, but moving on. No gameplay videos? Yeah, I'm pretty sure this is the reason that drove me into thinking it is going to get delayed. R* was very quiet for the last month and had still not released a single gameplay videos, and expecting game release in 2013 Spring! No way, if it would be coming out, I'm pretty sure they would be showing us more of the actual gameplay. Well, we have seen some stuff, but it's highly cinematic, although, so were GTA IV trailers and that was actually in game for most part...
TL;DR While these are only assumption, looking at previous R* titles, such as GTA IV, Max Payne 3, we ought to not judge the game yet.
@Monaco. Sort of, people were whining on the R* Newswire comments section.

All I can say is... pretty bad date. 15st September (1st in some countries) is start date for school, guess that turns down lotta people (nobody will buy a game when school have just started, right?). Just my 2 cents. Atleast R* isnt rushing and with sh*tty management.
I definitely agree with you RF. The release date is hands down, a big disappointement. I expected to be playing this during my summer vacations but, eh. Change of plans.
