This year's San Diego Comic-Con hasn't even started and we've already been inundated with announcements and new projects. One of the big themes this year - and over the past couple years - has been comic books tying into videogames. Today IGN is able to confirm that Ubisoft is working with DC Comics to create a one-shot based on the Driver videogame franchise.

The single issue is being written by David Lapham with interior art by Greg Scott and a cover by Jock. The story will basically bridge the time between Driv3r and Driver: San Francisco, which is due to release in early 2011. As fans know, the third Driver game ended with lead character Johns Tanner and his target, Jericho, gravely wounded as a result of a shootout. The one-shot picks up from that moment two years later.

We had a chance to chat with Lapham to get some more details. "After talking to the Driver people, I knew this was something I could have a lot of fun with and bring pieces of myself to and not just be a typist," Lapham told us. "The appeal of the project is the same thing that inspires the games makers, which are all those great 1960's and 70's films like Bullit, French Connection, Vanishing Point etc. that feature classic car chases."

One of the things we wondered most was how Lapham planned to bring the visceral car chases to life in the pages of a comic book. Videogames seemed far more natural to portray this type of action, so we wondered how much of a challenge that was for Lapham. "A comic is not completely natural for long car chase sequences," Lapham said. "Especially in a single issue story where the subtleties of car driving might just eat up pages. However there's driving and cars all over this thing. We just have to pick up the right shots and the right pieces to keep that feel over the whole piece when the characters have to stop and do things, like talk, and kick the crap out of each other. No one's ever far from their car though, especially not Tanner."

Lapham did suggest that Jericho might not be the main antagonist of his story, despite always being Tanner's ultimate goal. The writer noted that he felt the confrontation between the two enemies would be better suited for the game, but that he wanted to still tell the story of "how far [Tanner will] go to bring down the man who essentially killed him." Lapham did stress that one of his goals for this single book was to not get too deep in the history of the franchise, for fear of dragging down the main story, while still keeping things accessible to those who haven't played the game.

For those eager to get a taste of the Driver comic book, a free preview/sampler will be available at the DC (#1915) and Ubisoft (#4245) booths. Jock will be signings at both locations - be sure to swing by for times and days.

Fans have a bit of a wait before the Driver game and comic book are released. Stay tuned to IGN for the latest - and be sure to keep checking back all week and throughout the weekend for all the latest from Comic-Con.

YEAH, seems that the franchise is working hard to relive the series with a lot of marketing, etc
The comic looks great, hope that FINAL release of the game will be better than the E3 presentation
